Barkman Named Head of Genetics

We are pleased to announce that Darrel Barkman has been named WestGen’s Head of Genetics; a prestigious position in addition to his existing role of Genetic Advisor in Manitoba. The additional title is an important one in that while WestGen does not employ sire analysts to purchase the bulls, there is considerable skill required to select the right products for our customers from within the Semex battery of bulls. This applies to the proven sires on our proof sheet but perhaps even more to the Genomax bulls we choose to offer customers, a skill that Darrel has consistently demonstrated.

As the Head of Genetics, Darrel will provide leadership to the company on sires we will market and expertise for the entire WestGen team on how best to include those sires in breeding programs across the west. Complimentary selection of pedigrees to match the needs of producers and strategic identification of bulls that fit specific market niches will benefit the company and our owners too. Further, Darrel will share his insights with the WestGen team through internal communication as well as with our producers through contributions to our Bullseye newsletter and through our social media channels. The additional role is thus one that can make a real impact on the genetic competitiveness of western Canada.

Darrel joined the WestGen sales team five years ago after farming and breeding many influential cows under the Hylite prefix with his father Menno. During his tenure with WestGen, he has become a respected leader to his peers in a number of ways but in particular on identifying the right bulls for our progressive customers. We are pleased that Darrel has accepted this additional role and know that the company and our customers will benefit from his passion for genetics. The role demonstrates WestGen’s ongoing commitment to genetic improvement through products, services and people for western Canadian producers.
