For the fast-forward crowd there is currently no bull that can get you to where you want to go faster for Type and Production than Silverridge Ascend. Ranked #3 on CDN’s Top 100 Young Bull list, he is as current as you can be in genetic selection.
Ascend’s Pedigree
Ascend is our first Mogul son to be offered and undoubtedly will be among the most interesting. His Dam is Velthuis SG MOM Alica VG-85-2yr-CAN, a Man O Man from Allyndale-I Goldwyn Albany VG-87-2yr-CAN – a full sister to all those typey Goldwyn sons from Durham Atlee EX-92-4yr-USA. He is a brother to the very popular young Genomax sire Album who is currently on the WestGen proof sheet. As enticing as the female line is on this bull – made even more interesting by the fact that he is the highest rated son from Alicia to be registered to date – it is the sire stack on Mogul that is worth spending the time on here.
Mogul – different for Canada
Mogul is not yet proven but his sire Dorcy is. He ranks #1 on the US TPI list. Dorcy is a Bolton son which is not so unique, even in Canada. Dorcy’s dam, a rare daughter from Peckenstein Form Brett, is rather unique. Brett is a Formation son from an Esquimau (French sire; Sammy x Starbuck). Moreover, Mogul, among just a handful of Dorcy sons available, is refreshingly unique as well on his maternal side of the pedigree. His dam is sired by Pasen Marsh, a Dixie-Lee Aaron son from a Kenjo Prescott dam (Southwind x Chief Mark) who is also rarely found in AI pedigrees. Indeed, while Mogul is not yet proven, he and his sons provide a very good opportunity for Canadian producers to take advantage of something that is as close to outcross as we will find in many ways today.
More than just Unique
Back to Ascend – this young bull is rated over +3400 for LPI and manages to combine this terrific rating with a +17 for Conformation, a +16 for MS and +15 F&L. For all three traits his DGV ratings are a point higher still. Ascend is no slouch on Health traits either. He is plus-rated for all the traits with a 111 for Herd Life, 2.71 for SCS, 102 for Daughter Fertility and 104 for Calving Ability and Daughter Calving Ability.
When it comes to using genomic young sires, the best advice is still to spread your risk. That said, just as you might take a double helping from your favourite food at a dinner buffet, Ascend is a genomic young sire that you might use a little more than usual! After all, he is already at the top of the list and an opportunity to change things up a bit.
